Global warming, air pollution, free the Tibetans, will this affect the Beijing Olympic games? the athletes say they are not coming because it is too hot over there, it will be hard to breathe because of the air pollution and they think that they are being too overpowering on the Tibetans and not letting them free. If athletes do not go then the olympics will b ruined. The climate over there is immensely hot and climate is a big deal to the athletes and they intend to get hot and once there too hot they may go unconscious, have heatstroke or even fall to the ground when there playing. Also there is very dirty water there so if the canoers drink some they may get very sick.

week 8

table tennis is a sport in which 2-4 players hit a light weighted ball back and forth to each other with their paddles. the game is on a table which is divided by a net. The players who serves first must bounce the ball on their side of the field and bounce it on the opponents side of the field. to score points the players must keep playing the ball back and forth until someone does not hit it or misses or hits it out or bounce it on there side of there field when not suppose to. the players must score 21 points to win 1 set you must win 5-7 sets to win.

the Olympic games are divided into summer and winter events. the summer and winter games are held every leap year (4 years). they are trying to get 302 events in 28 sports. they have woman and men events.

in the ancient times the were no rich advertising contracts with shoe companies or other deals. the athletes usually competed for pride, patriotism, and religious honor. although some of these athletes were paid with large amounts of money, up to ten times more than a annual salary of soldier. the Olympic winners received an olive tree branch. the branches that the athletes receive is cut from a branch from the backyard of the temple of zues and were supposably planted by Hercules. the winners of the games show the ancient coliseum's and the goddess of victory holding the laurel crowns on the obverse side which is engraved 'XXIVTH Olympiad Seoul. the back side shows a pigeon(the symbol of peace) soaring up holding a laurel branch in its mouth and the Seoul Olympic composed to three Taeguk patterns from the Korean flag and five olympic rings. the medals were manufactured. the gold took up to 92.5% of the content of the gold medal which was gilded with 5 grams or more. it was 60mm in diameter and weighed around 145 grams. the silver took up to 92.5% of the silver medal and the other 7.5% is bronze. it was 60mm in diameter like the gold medal but weighs 5 grams less. the bronze medal contained 95% of bronze, 4% of copper and 1% of copper. it was also 60mm in diameter. info and pic from:http://olympic-museum.de/w_medals/wmed1988.htm

the idea of the Olympic torch came was first inaugurated on the 1928 Olympic games in Amsterdam. the design of the Los Angeles coliseum was also included a facility of a large flame. there wasn't any torch relay in the ancient Olympics. WEEK 4

the five ringed symbol represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes throughout the world at the olympics. Many believe that the colors of the olympic rings : blue,black,red,yellow and green on a white field are used because at least one of the colors are in each of the flags of the athletes nations participating in the Olympic. the five uniting rings express the continents brought together by the olympics.

WEEK 3

the modern Olympic motto is 'Citius, Altius, Fortius'. Those three latin words mean 'higher, swifter, stronger'. Baron De Coubertin borrowed this motto from Henri Martin Dideon, the head master/leader of Arcueil college in Paris. The first modern Olympic games where held in Athens , Greece, in 1896. The man who restarted the Olympic games was a Frenchmen named Baron Pierre de Coubertin. He thought to start the Olympic games at 1900 but the 34 other countries were so enthralled that they wanted him to move it up to 1896. The Olympic torch idea was first inaugurated in the 1932 games at Los Angeles. But there was no torch relay in the ancient Olympics however there were torch relays in other ancient Greek athletic festivals. The first modern games was held in Athens, Greece. Lots of young men and woman came from all over the world to compete in the sports for their country.

the Greeks that came to the sanctuary of Zues at Olympia had the same cultured beliefs and spoke the same language. All athletes were male citizens of the city states from all around the Greek world, even from as far away to the west of Spain and to the east of turkey. the sancuary was named after Mt. Olympus in the mainlands of Greece.
